Where the fairways meet the forest and medieval castles frame the valley – the Golf & Country Hotel Clervaux is the Luxembourg Ardennes at its most elegant.

The hotel

The Golf & Country Hotel – at a glance

Tucked into the valley of the Our river in northern Luxembourg, surrounded by beech and oak forest and with the spires of Clervaux’s Benedictine abbey visible from the terrace, the Golf & Country Hotel Clervaux offers something increasingly rare in European hospitality: a four-star property that genuinely earns its stars in a setting that justifies the journey.

The hotel’s most distinctive feature is its proximity to Clervaux Golf Club – guests are literally steps from the first tee. But the Golf & Country Hotel is far more than a golfer’s base. Its conference and events facilities make it one of the most sought-after MICE destinations in the Greater Region (Luxembourg, Lorraine, Saarland, Rhineland-Palatinate and Wallonia). Its cultural setting – flanked by a UNESCO-listed photography museum, a medieval castle and a working Benedictine abbey – makes it equally compelling for cultural weekend breaks.

“Clervaux doesn’t shout. It doesn’t need to. The castle on the hill, the abbey bells at dusk and the sound of the river do everything a brochure never could.”

Clervaux and the Luxembourg Ardennes

Clervaux (Luxembourgish: Clierf) is a small town of approximately 1,700 inhabitants in the far north of Luxembourg, nestled in a bend of the River Our in the heart of the Ardennes. Despite its modest size, Clervaux punches well above its weight culturally and architecturally, and its position at the crossroads of the Greater Region makes it easily accessible from Belgium, Germany and France as well as from Luxembourg City.

The Luxembourg Ardennes – sometimes called the Oesling – is the more elevated, wilder and greener part of the country. It is plateau country, cut through by deep river valleys, covered in mixed deciduous forest and dotted with farmhouses, ruined castles and ancient abbeys. This is not the Luxembourg of finance and government buildings – it is Luxembourg at its most elemental, an unhurried landscape of seasons and silences.

The Greater Region connection

Clervaux sits at the heart of the Greater Region – a cross-border conurbation connecting Luxembourg with adjacent parts of Belgium (Wallonia), France (Lorraine/Grand Est) and Germany (Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate). For MICE organisers, this geographical position is a significant advantage: delegates can arrive from multiple countries without long-haul travel, and the cultural diversity of the region enriches any event programme.

Golf – Clervaux Golf Club on the doorstep

For golf travellers, the location of the Golf & Country Hotel is the defining feature: the Clervaux Golf Club is directly adjacent to the hotel – guests can walk from their room to the first tee without setting foot in a car. In the world of golf hotels, this level of proximity is genuinely rare.

The Clervaux Golf Club is laid out across the rolling Ardennes landscape, taking full advantage of the natural topography of the Our valley. The course combines technical challenge with extraordinary scenery – fairways cut through woodland, greens framed by views of the surrounding hills, and the kind of quiet that only forest landscapes can produce.

The Course

The Clervaux Golf Club course is designed to challenge players of all levels. The varying elevation changes and woodland setting demand both accuracy and course management. Each hole offers a distinct character, shaped by the natural contours of the Ardennes terrain.

Facilities

Clubhouse with restaurant, pro shop, driving range and practice facilities. Club hire available for visiting players. The hotel’s direct connection to the club means seamless access to tee times, equipment and instruction.

Golf Breaks & Packages

The Golf & Country Hotel offers dedicated golf break packages combining accommodation, green fees and sometimes half-board dining. These are particularly popular for groups, golf societies and corporate golf days. Enquire directly at the hotel for current packages.

Group Golf Events

Corporate golf days, society events and tournament formats can be arranged through the hotel and club. The combination of on-site accommodation and direct course access makes Clervaux an excellent venue for multi-day golf events in the heart of Europe.

Golf travel tipThe Ardennes region in spring (April–May) and early autumn (September–October) offers ideal golf conditions: mild temperatures, lush fairways and very manageable course traffic. Avoid high summer for the most relaxed experience on and off the course.

Golf in the Greater Region

Beyond Clervaux Golf Club, the Greater Region offers a number of other interesting courses within a reasonable drive. The Golf & Country Hotel makes an excellent base from which to explore golf in Luxembourg, southern Belgium and the German border region – combining a round at different clubs over a multi-day stay with the comfort of returning each evening to the same excellent hotel.

Meetings & Events

MICE – conferences & events in the Ardennes

The Golf & Country Hotel Clervaux has firmly established itself as one of the premier MICE venues in the Luxembourg Ardennes and the broader Greater Region. Its combination of professional conference infrastructure, a remarkable natural setting and a rich programme of out-of-meeting experiences makes it a compelling alternative to urban conference hotels.

The rationale for choosing Clervaux for a corporate event is straightforward: delegates arrive focused, unburdened by city distractions, and the Ardennes setting creates a natural environment for clear thinking, productive discussion and team cohesion. After a full day in the conference room, a walk through beech forest, an evening at the abbey or a round of golf restores perspective in a way that no city hotel programme can replicate.

Why the Greater Region for MICE?

The Greater Region is one of Europe’s most underutilised MICE destinations. Luxembourg’s stable political environment, excellent transport links (Luxembourg City Airport with direct connections across Europe), strong multilingual professional culture and competitive hotel rates relative to Western European capitals make it a sensible and sophisticated choice for international corporate events. Clervaux adds the dimension of natural beauty and cultural depth that delegates remember long after the conference slides are forgotten.

MICE planner tip For events of 20–120 delegates, the Golf & Country Hotel Clervaux offers a self-contained, distraction-free environment that is genuinely rare in European MICE. Request a site visit before committing – the hotel team is experienced in hosting complex multi-day programmes and will tailor the offer to your brief.
Culture & Heritage

Sights – castle, abbey & the Family of Man

Clervaux is a town of remarkable cultural density for its size. Within a few minutes of the Golf & Country Hotel, three heritage sites of international significance await – each offering a completely different cultural experience.

2.1 miles · UNESCO Memory of the World

Clervaux Castle & The Family of Man

Clervaux Castle is the defining landmark of the town – a medieval and Renaissance fortified residence that dominates the valley from its hilltop position. Originally built in the 12th century by the Counts of Clervaux, it was largely rebuilt after severe damage in the Second World War. Today it houses three museums, the most celebrated of which is The Family of Man.

The Family of Man is one of the most visited photography exhibitions in the world and one of the most significant cultural projects of the 20th century. Conceived by photographer Edward Steichen and first exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1955, the exhibition brought together 503 photographs by 273 photographers from 68 countries under a single humanist theme: the universal experience of being human. In 2003, UNESCO inscribed The Family of Man on the Memory of the World Register – one of the highest distinctions in the global heritage of documentary collections. The permanent installation in Clervaux Castle is the world’s only remaining complete showing of the original exhibition. Admission approx. €6.

Saint-Maurice Abbey

Perched dramatically on a rocky spur above the town, the Abbey of Saint-Maurice and Saint-Maur is an active Benedictine monastery founded in 1910. The neo-Romanesque complex – built in warm sandstone with a distinctive ochre tone – is one of the most architecturally striking religious buildings in Luxembourg.

The abbey is open to visitors during designated hours; the monks’ liturgical schedule – with Gregorian chant sung at the canonical hours – can be attended by the public, and the experience of hearing plainsong in the stone chapel as evening falls over the Ardennes valley is one of the most memorable cultural encounters the region offers. The abbey also produces and sells its own products including honey, biscuits and liqueurs, available at the monastery shop.

Battle of the Bulge – Clervaux’s wartime story

Clervaux played a pivotal and painful role in the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944–January 1945), the last major German offensive on the Western Front. The town was captured by German forces on 18 December 1944 after fierce fighting; the castle changed hands multiple times before Allied forces liberated the town in late January 1945. Much of the town was destroyed during the fighting.

Clervaux Castle houses a permanent exhibition dedicated to the Battle of the Bulge, with photographs, equipment and documents from the campaign. The surrounding Ardennes landscape – from Bastogne in Belgium to the Our valley – constitutes one of the most historically significant battlefields of the Second World War, and Clervaux is an important stop on any historical itinerary through this region.

Outdoors

Nature, walking & the Ardennes landscape

The Luxembourg Ardennes is one of the most rewarding walking and cycling regions in the Benelux countries. The dense mixed forest, the network of river valleys and the relative absence of mass tourism create conditions for outdoor activity that are difficult to match in western Europe.

Walking & hiking

The Our Nature Park (Naturpark Our), which extends along the Our river valley across the Luxembourg–German border, offers a remarkable network of marked walking trails. The long-distance trail Our Walk follows the river for over 60 kilometres through some of the most dramatic valley scenery in the region. Shorter circular routes of 8–15 kilometres can be completed in a half-day directly from Clervaux. The hotel can advise on the best routes suited to the group’s fitness level and available time.

Cycling

The Our Valley cycling route follows the river on a largely traffic-free path from Ouren (Belgium) to Wallendorf (Germany), passing through Clervaux along the way. E-bike hire is increasingly available in the region, making the valley routes accessible to all fitness levels. The hotel can arrange bike hire and route information for cycling guests.

Winter activities

In cold winters, the Ardennes plateau above Clervaux can receive significant snowfall, and cross-country skiing on the plateau trails is possible when conditions allow. The season is short and unpredictable, but for those who time their visit correctly it adds an extraordinary dimension to the Ardennes experience.

Outdoor activities near the hotel

  • Marked hiking trails from the hotel grounds into the Our valley forest
  • Our Nature Park – over 60 km of long-distance walking trails
  • Our Valley cycling route – largely traffic-free along the river
  • E-bike hire available in the region – hotel can advise
  • Fishing in the Our river (licence required – hotel can assist)
  • Guided forest walks can be arranged through the hotel for groups
  • Cross-country skiing when snow conditions allow (December–February)
Food & Drink

Gastronomy & local cuisine

Luxembourg’s culinary tradition is a product of its geography: located between France, Germany and Belgium, it has absorbed the best of all three while developing its own distinct identity. In the Ardennes north, the cuisine leans toward the hearty and seasonal – game from the forest, trout from the rivers, smoked meats and robust dairy products from the plateau farms.

Ardennes specialities

Judd mat Gaardebounen – smoked collar of pork with broad beans in a cream sauce – is Luxembourg’s national dish and one of the most warming things you can eat after a day on the golf course or the walking trail. Gromperekichelcher (potato fritters with shallots and parsley) appear at every village festival and deserve to be eaten fresh from the pan. Game from the Ardennes – venison, wild boar, pheasant and hare – features prominently on restaurant menus from October through February.

Luxembourg produces a small but highly respected range of Moselle wines – predominantly Riesling, Rivaner and Auxerrois – and the Cremant de Luxembourg sparkling wine is an excellent and unjustly underrated alternative to Champagne. The hotel’s wine list will include local producers alongside broader European selections.

Food & drink tipThe abbey shop at Saint-Maurice sells the monks’ own honey, herbal liqueurs and biscuits – excellent small gifts and genuinely artisan products. The Ardennes region also produces excellent charcuterie and smoked products; look out for them at local markets and farm shops on the drive through the plateau.
