CYCLING – CRUISES: Experience the best of both worlds with A-ROSA: the freedom of cycling along stunning river routes – and returning each evening to a comfortable ship. Cycling packages, e-bike hire and all fares explained.

Introduction

Why A-ROSA cycling cruises are so special

River cruising has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. Once associated with leisurely sightseeing from a coach window, it has become one of the most active and versatile travel formats available – and A-ROSA has led this change. The Rostock based river cruise line has an exceptional talent for combining two seemingly contradictory concepts: the freedom of cycling and the comfort of a modern river cruise ship.

The principle is as elegant as it is simple: the ship glides upstream or downstream while cycling guests pedal ahead along the riverbank, explore villages, meander through vineyards or simply take in the landscape at their own pace – then find the ship waiting at its next mooring at the end of the day. No luggage to drag, no hotel changes, no logistics to manage. Just cycling, scenery and the restaurant deck when you return.

A-ROSA cycling cruises are for people who want an active holiday without sacrificing comfort – and who don’t want to spend their mornings working out how to move their bags to the next town.”

A-ROSA offers the cycling experience on five of Europe’s most beautiful rivers: the Danube, Rhine, Rhône, Seine and Douro. Each route has its own character, highlights and cycling track quality. This guide covers everything you need: the routes, the cycling packages, e-bike options, fares and – crucially – how to combine the cruise with a hotel before and after to create a complete and seamless journey.

The Routes

The five river routes with cycling in detail

A-ROSA operates cycling cruises on five European rivers, each with its own landscape character, highlights and level of cycling challenge. Here is a detailed overview to help you choose the right route.

Austria · Germany · Hungary · Slovakia

A-ROSA on the Danube

The Danube is the classic European river cruise route – and simultaneously one of the finest cycling routes on the continent. The legendary Danube Cycle Path (EuroVelo 6) follows the river over long stretches and is widely considered one of the great long-distance cycling routes of Europe: well signposted, predominantly flat, with changing scenery from Bavarian floodplain forests to the Hungarian lowlands. Typical A-ROSA Danube itineraries connect Passau, Linz, Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.

The Wachau Valley between Melk and Krems – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with vineyards, monasteries and medieval villages directly on the water – ranks among the most beautiful cycling stretches in Central Europe. For beginners, the Danube is the most accessible choice: predominantly flat, superbly waymarked and lined with cafés and wine taverns throughout.

A-ROSA on the Rhine

The Rhine offers perhaps the most varied backdrop of all five routes. The Middle Rhine Valley between Rüdesheim and Koblenz – likewise a UNESCO World Heritage Site – is a dramatic landscape of steep vineyard slopes, medieval castle ruins and small wine towns that appear to have grown directly from the riverbank. A-ROSA operates Rhine itineraries between Basle, Strasbourg, Rüdesheim, Cologne and Amsterdam.

The Dutch section of the Rhine is a cyclist’s dream: kilometres of dyke cycling paths, windmills, tulip fields in spring and the intricate canal network around Amsterdam. This is flat, effortless cycling through some of the most iconic scenery in Europe. The Middle Rhine section requires rather more energy but rewards with unforgettable views from every bend.

A-ROSA on the Rhône

The Rhône is the sunniest and most gastronomically rewarding of the five A-ROSA cycling routes. The itinerary passes through the Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône wine regions before descending into Provence – lavender fields, Roman amphitheatres and the medieval Papal Palace in Avignon. Cycling the Rhône means: drifting through vineyards, breakfasting at a village boulangerie and spending afternoons among the ruins of Arles or Orange.

The Rhône cycle paths (ViaRhôna) are well developed but can be hilly, particularly between Lyon and Vienne. The southern stretch from Avignon is flatter and very enjoyable. For those who want to experience France at the pace of a bicycle, this is the perfect route.

A-ROSA on the Seine

The Seine route is the most literary of the five: from Paris along the châteaux of the Île-de-France, past impressionist landscapes (Giverny – Monet’s garden – lies directly along the route), through Normandy to the river estuary. Cycling the Seine means: gliding along gentle towpaths, riding through villages that look like paintings, and standing before the gothic cathedral in Rouen that Monet painted twenty times.

The cycle paths along the Seine (Seine à Vélo) are predominantly flat and ideally suited to moderate cyclists. The Normandy section – with apple orchards, calvados distilleries and proximity to the coast – is a particular delight. A day trip by bicycle to Giverny is one of the route’s absolute highlights.

A-ROSA on the Douro

The Douro in Portugal is the most exotic and dramatic of the five routes. The Douro Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – a breathtaking gorge with steeply terraced vineyards from which port wine has been produced for centuries. The landscape is wilder, the roads more winding, the climbs sometimes demanding. But the rewards are extraordinary: intimate quintas (wine estates) directly on the water, golden late-afternoon light across the valley, wine tastings at the producer’s door.

Important to note: the Douro is considerably more challenging than the other rivers. The slopes are steep, summer temperatures can be high, and not all riverside sections have fully developed cycle paths. E-bikes are strongly recommended here and well available through A-ROSA.

Route recommendationFor first-time cycling cruise guests, we recommend the Danube or Seine – both with excellent, predominantly flat cycling infrastructure. More confident cyclists choose the Rhône or Rhine. The Douro is only comfortable without an e-bike for fit, experienced cyclists – everyone else: hire the e-bike.

The Offer

A-ROSA cycling package – what’s included?

A-ROSA offers its cycling holidays as a bookable add-on to the standard cruise fare. The cycling packages are designed so that cyclists need to worry about nothing: everything required for an active river journey is bundled and pre-organised.

What the A-ROSA cycling package typically includes

Cycling package contents

  • Quality touring or trekking bicycle(21 gears or more, ladies’ and gents’ models, various frame sizes) for the entire duration of the cruise
  • Cycling helmetin the correct size – included, not optional
  • Lock and puncture repair kitplus a basic on-board toolkit
  • Daily route mapsfor the relevant route, coordinated with the ship’s mooring schedule
  • GPS tracksfor download or as a printed sheet (depending on ship and route)
  • Daily briefingby the on-board cycling guide covering the day’s route, highlights, difficulties and meeting points
  • Guided cycling stages(on selected days) led by the cycling guide – ideal for those less confident with navigation
  • Shuttle service: on longer stages or in bad weather, a transfer service brings cyclists and bicycles to the next mooring point
  • Breakdown assistance: if a mechanical problem occurs, the cycling team arranges a replacement or repair

Tips and points to note

The cycling package is booked per person and for the entire cruise – daily booking is not typically possible. Guests wishing to bring their own bicycle should enquire about A-ROSA’s carriage conditions directly, as space on board is limited. E-bikes are available as an upgrade to the standard bicycle (see next section).

For couples or groups travelling together: the cycling package can be booked individually – not all cabin companions need to take the package. Those who prefer coach excursions or sightseeing on foot simply book the standard fare.

Booking tipBook the cycling package as early as possible – particularly on popular routes such as the Danube and Rhine, the allocation of hire bicycles can be limited. Early bookers also often benefit from better overall prices through combined early-booking offers.
E-mobility

E-bike hire on board – cycling without limits

The e-bike has transformed the cycling cruise. Anyone who previously avoided cycling days because of hills, heat or fitness concerns can now simply engage the motor – and suddenly even the vineyard slopes of the Douro or the climbs of the Middle Rhine become perfectly manageable. A-ROSA has recognised this and offers the option to hire an e-bike as an upgrade to the standard bicycle on all routes.

A-ROSA e-bike offer at a glance  The e-bike upgrade replaces the standard touring bicycle in the cycling package with a quality pedelec featuring a mid-drive motor (typically Bosch Performance Line or equivalent), a large battery and comfortable specification. Available on all five routes; limited availability – book early.

Motor & battery

Bosch Performance Line or equivalent; battery 500–625 Wh; range 60–120 km depending on assistance level and terrain. Daily charging on board guaranteed overnight.

Frame & comfort

Ladies’ and gents’ frames in multiple sizes; ergonomic saddle; integrated rack; typically 3–5 assistance levels (Eco through Turbo).

Supplement cost

The e-bike upgrade costs an additional fee on top of the standard cycling package – typicallyapprox. €100–200 per personfor the entire cruise duration. Confirm the current price at the time of booking.

Particularly recommended for

Douro (near-essential given the gradients), Rhône (middle sections), Middle Rhine; all cyclists aged 60+ and everyone who wants to cycle confidently at their own pace.

Can I hire an e-bike without the cycling package?

No – the e-bike upgrade is only available as part of the cycling package. To hire an e-bike, you first add the cycling package to your cruise fare, then select the e-bike upgrade. The combination standard fare + cycling package + e-bike upgrade is the most complete – and for many the most enjoyable – booking option.

Before & After the Cruise

Hotel tips before and after the cruise

A river cruise typically begins and ends at one of the major embarkation ports. Combining the cruise with one or two nights before boarding and after disembarking transforms it into a complete, rounded holiday – and protects against travel delays that might otherwise jeopardise the start of the journey. Our recommendation: book at least one night before embarkation at the departure port, so you arrive rested and without stress.

Practical hotel booking tips

How to book pre- and post-cruise hotels optimally

  • Always book with free cancellation– cruise dates can shift; flexibility is invaluable.
  • Booking platforms: beachcom.de, schweiz366.de, lastminute366.de – comparing prices pays off, especially in peak season.
  • Airport vs. city centre:If you are boarding the same day you arrive, choose a hotel close to the embarkation port rather than the airport.
  • For post-cruise nights: note that disembarkation is often complete only in the early morning – alate check-out optionat the hotel is very useful.
  • For Porto/Douro: book the hotelin Porto itself (not Lisbon) – embarkation typically takes place in Porto or nearby ports.
  • Tip: many travel agents offer combined hotel-cruise packages that can work out cheaper than separate bookings.
Preparation

Practical planning & packing list for cyclists

A river cruise with cycling calls for a slightly different packing list than a standard cruise. Since there is ample storage space on board, you do not need to pack minimally – but anything carried on the bicycle should be light and compact.

Packing list for A-ROSA cycling cruises

  • Cycling clothing:2–3 breathable cycling jerseys, 1–2 padded cycling shorts, lightweight packable rain jacket, gloves (short and long finger)
  • Footwear:Cycling shoes or sturdy trainers; bring normal leisure shoes for evenings on board
  • Sun protection:Cycling helmet (provided), sunglasses, sunscreen SPF 30+, buff or headband
  • Navigation:Smartphone with handlebar mount (or GPS device); A-ROSA provides maps, supplement with your own tracks via Komoot or similar
  • On-route nutrition:Drinks bottle (on the bike); energy bars for longer stages; A-ROSA provides packed lunches on some routes
  • Tech:Powerbank for smartphone; charging cables; e-bike batteries are charged by the ship overnight
  • Evening on board:Smart-casual clothing for the restaurant (no strict dress code at A-ROSA, but neat appearance is expected)
  • First aid:Pain relief, blister plasters, muscle gel for tired legs, tick repellent (particularly Danube route)

Fitness preparation

A-ROSA cycling cruises are not a competitive sport – but anyone who has rarely cycled more than a few kilometres should ideally do some preparation rides in the four to six weeks before departure. Daily stages range – according to your own preference – from 20 to 60+ km; you cycle as much or as little as you like. The ship sets the direction; you set the distance.
