TRAVEL GUIDE ANDALUSIA | SOTOGRANDE GOLF & WELLNESS RESORT
Sotogrande: Europe’s Premier Golf and Lifestyle Resort on Spain’s Costa del Sol
Valderrama, home of the 1997 Ryder Cup, is just minutes away. So is one of Europe’s finest padel academies, a 3,500 sq m thalassotherapy spa, and a lifestyle resort that Forbes Travel Guide calls ‘design-forward style with exceptional locally rooted dining’. Welcome to Sotogrande.
So/Sotogrande Spa And Golf Resort Hotel
There are places in southern Spain where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean seem to exist simultaneously — where cork forests and olive groves roll down towards a shimmering coastline, where the scent of jasmine drifts across manicured fairways, and where the pace of life slows just enough to remind you what leisure actually means. Sotogrande is one of those places. Tucked into the westernmost corner of the Costa del Sol, straddling the boundary between Cádiz province and the Costa de la Luz, it sits at the precise point where Europe meets Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar — and where world-class sport meets genuinely restorative wellness.
Sotogrande is not a village, a city or a beach resort in any conventional sense. It is a private residential and resort community, developed since the 1960s around the principles of space, quality and discretion. Its population swells in summer with Madrid’s upper classes and international visitors who return year after year, drawn by the golf, the polo, the sailing, the padel and the Andalusian light. The anchor of the resort’s hotel offering is the SO/ Sotogrande Spa and Golf Resort Hotel — a five-star property that Forbes Travel Guide, the World Luxury Hotel Awards 2026 and National Club Golfer’s Top 100 European Resorts have all recognised as one of the finest destination resorts in southern Europe. This guide covers everything you need to know to plan a stay.

What makes Sotogrande genuinely distinctive among European resort destinations is the density of world-class facilities in a relatively compact area — and the fact that it has maintained a sense of exclusivity and calm that the more crowded parts of the Costa del Sol lost decades ago. More than 70 golf courses have given the wider Costa del Sol the nickname Costa del Golf, and Sotogrande sits at the heart of the very finest cluster: Real Club Valderrama, La Reserva Club, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, The Alto Club and La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links are all within a seven-mile radius of the SO/ Sotogrande hotel. Alongside golf, the resort is one of Europe’s leading polo destinations — the Santa Maria Polo Club hosts international competitions throughout the summer — and the La Reserva Club’s padel and tennis facilities are among the best in Andalusia.
Sotogrande acts as a total retreat with complete discretion. Hidden away in the Andalusian countryside, it offers a secluded inland location overlooking cork forests, olive groves and distant mountains — yet within easy reach of Gibraltar, Marbella and the ferry to Morocco.
2. SO/ Sotogrande Hotel: accommodation, design and dining
The SO/ Sotogrande Spa and Golf Resort Hotel is the undisputed flagship of the Sotogrande resort. Part of Ennismore’s fashion-driven SO/ brand, the property occupies the site of a historic Andalusian cortijo (farmhouse) and has been designed in collaboration with Spanish swimwear designer Dolores Cortés — with the result that it feels more like a stylish private house than a conventional hotel, while delivering every amenity of a serious five-star resort.
Rooms and Suites
The hotel offers 152 rooms and suites, all with terraces or balconies, double sinks, large windows and views over the Mediterranean gardens, golf course or distant sea. Interiors draw on the South Andalusian cortijo aesthetic — warm terracotta tones, local materials, botanical prints — but handled with a contemporary lightness that avoids cliché. Suites include generous living areas and private garden terraces. The property’s design has been consistently praised by guests and reviewers for hitting the balance between style and comfort without sacrificing either.
Dining: four restaurants and bars
SO/ Sotogrande’s gastronomic offer spans four distinct venues, each with its own personality:
- Cortijo Santa Maria 1962: The main restaurant, inspired by traditional Andalusian cuisine; seasonal menus featuring Pata Negra ham, fresh local seafood and locally sourced produce; indoor and terrace dining
- Ixo Tapas and Bar: Artisan cocktails and creative tapas in a social, vibrant atmosphere; ideal for evening drinks and light dining
- Marxa (chiringuito): The pool-side beach club restaurant; colourful, informal, serving Mediterranean dishes; summer barbecue and poolside parties
- Society Clubhouse: All-day dining and grab-and-go; casual comfort food for golfers and active guests between activities
The resort also hosts seasonal collaborations with Michelin-starred chefs — including tasting menus created by Nicolas Isnard — which elevate the gastronomic experience beyond what a standard resort hotel typically offers.
Pools
Three outdoor pools — an infinity pool with panoramic views of the Mediterranean landscape, a family pool with dedicated children’s zone (seasonal, Easter to September), and a deck pool — plus one 20-metre indoor heated pool in the spa. The infinity pool is one of the most photographed features of the property, and with good reason: the combination of blue water, rolling Andalusian hills and a distant sliver of sea is genuinely cinematic.
| Booking tip
The SO/ Sotogrande Golf Tour Classic package (5 nights) includes rounds at Real Club Valderrama, Real Club Golf Sotogrande and La Reserva Club — the three most prestigious courses in the area. Golf group packages offer one complimentary room per night for every seven paying amateurs. Book directly through Sportmeeting for the best package rates. |
3. Golf: Valderrama, Alto Club, La Reserva and the Sotogrande Golf Tour
For golfers, Sotogrande is not simply a good destination — it is one of the top five golf resort destinations in Europe. The combination of five world-class courses within a seven-mile radius, year-round playable conditions and a five-star hotel that specialises in golf packages makes it a benchmark against which other European golf resorts are measured.
Real Club Valderrama — Europe’s most prestigious course
Valderrama is the crown jewel of Sotogrande golf and one of the most celebrated golf courses in the world. Consistently ranked as the best course in continental Europe, it was the first course outside the USA and UK to host the Ryder Cup (1997), was home to the Volvo Masters and Andalucia Masters 24 times, and has hosted the WGC-American Express Championship. The layout — tight, wooded, strategically demanding — rewards precision over power and punishes any loss of concentration. Playing Valderrama is, for many golfers, a bucket-list experience that justifies the trip to Sotogrande in itself. Access is through hotel packages or, for members’ guests, direct invitation.
The Alto Club — on-site and exceptional
The Alto Club’s 18-hole course sits within the SO/ Sotogrande resort grounds — guests can walk to the first tee from the hotel. The course offers an entertaining layout enhanced by views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Andalusian countryside, with lakes, strategic bunkering and well-conditioned greens. It is the most accessible of the five Sotogrande courses in both price and logistics, and features a prestigious academy with full teaching and analysis facilities. The partnership between The Alto Club and SO/ Sotogrande produces some of the best stay-and-play packages in the region.
La Reserva Club
La Reserva Club, designed by Cabell Robinson and set in a natural cork and pine forest reserve, offers both golf and an extraordinary beach club experience. La Reserva Beach — a freshwater beach club in the hills with a 2,000 sq m lake and Atlantic-style sand — is one of the most talked-about resort facilities in southern Spain. The golf course at La Reserva is consistently rated among the top courses in Andalusia and is included in several SO/ Sotogrande golf packages.
Real Club de Golf Sotogrande and La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links
Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1964, is one of Spain’s oldest and most revered golf clubs. La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links, situated on the coast with views of Gibraltar and the African coast, is one of the few genuine links courses in Spain — a rare style for a Mediterranean climate and a memorable experience for golfers used to parkland courses. Both are available through SO/ Sotogrande package arrangements.
| Course | Type | Distance from hotel | Notable feature |
| The Alto Club | Parkland, 18 holes | On-site (walkable) | Hotel partner; academy; Mediterranean views |
| Real Club Valderrama | Parkland, 18 holes | 5 min drive | 1997 Ryder Cup host; best course in continental Europe |
| La Reserva Club | Parkland, 18 holes | 7 min drive | La Reserva Beach Club; cork and pine forest setting |
| Real Club de Golf Sotogrande | Parkland, 18 holes | 5 min drive | Robert Trent Jones Sr. design; historic club (1964) |
| La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links | Links, 18 holes | 10 min drive | Only links course in area; views of Gibraltar and Africa |
4. Tennis and Padel at La Reserva Club
The Sotogrande area has quietly become one of the premier padel and tennis destinations on the Costa del Sol, and La Reserva Club’s racquet sports facilities are the centrepiece of that reputation. The club’s Tennis and Padel Academy operates year-round with programmes for adults and children aligned with the Sotogrande International School calendar.
The facilities
- Four competition clay courts: full-size, well-maintained, suitable for professional and recreational play
- Five glass-walled padel courts: the standard for serious padel play; excellent visibility for spectators; suitable for tournaments
- Sports Bar: open from 9am; serving fresh local produce; social hub for players before and after court time
- Beach volleyball court: dedicated court for an additional racquet-free option
Academy programmes
The Tennis and Padel Academy at La Reserva offers individual lessons (45 minutes to two hours), group classes for two to four players, and intensive programmes for all levels. Children’s programmes run Monday to Saturday in line with the school calendar. Adult group classes and private coaching are available throughout the week, with visiting coaches and occasional clinics with touring professionals. A ten-class voucher system makes regular training economical for extended stays or local residents.
Sotogrande’s padel scene has grown dramatically in the past decade, reflecting the sport’s explosion in popularity across Spain and southern Europe. For visitors who play padel regularly at home and want to improve or simply play at a high level, the glass-walled courts and coaching staff at La Reserva Club provide an experience that very few resort destinations can match.
| Tennis and padel booking
Courts can be booked through the SO/ Sotogrande hotel concierge or directly through La Reserva Club. For stay-and-play packages combining accommodation with daily court time and optional coaching, enquire directly with the hotel’s activity team. Early morning and late afternoon slots are most popular in summer; mid-morning play is very comfortable in spring and autumn. |
5. Wellness: the SO/ Spa, thalassotherapy and SO/ Fit
The SO/ Spa and Wellness Club at SO/ Sotogrande is one of the largest and most comprehensively equipped hotel spas in Andalusia. At approximately 3,500 square metres (37,500 sq ft), it occupies a dedicated wing of the resort set within lush Mediterranean gardens, with views towards the sea on the horizon from its upper terraces. The design aesthetic is Art Deco-influenced, and the facilities have recently been upgraded to include a new range of thalassotherapy-inspired treatments that position the spa firmly at the forefront of the resort wellness market.
Spa facilities
- 8 dedicated treatment cabins: full range of body and facial treatments
- Hammam (Turkish bath) with olive-based ritual treatments
- Cryotherapy chamber: increasingly sought-after recovery modality for athletes and active guests
- Flotation room: sensory deprivation floating for deep relaxation
- Thermal and hydroelectric pools: thermal circuit for pre-treatment preparation and standalone relaxation
- Physiotherapy room: on-site physiotherapist for injury treatment, sports recovery and rehabilitation
- Beauty Studio: hair, nails and cosmetic treatments
- 20-metre indoor heated pool: available year-round regardless of weather
- Relaxation and socialising area: post-treatment recovery space
SO/ Fit: the 24/7 fitness centre
SO/ Fit is the hotel’s full-service fitness centre, open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. It is equipped with the latest cardio and strength training equipment in both indoor and outdoor areas, and includes a dedicated cycling studio. Daily collective fitness classes, personal training sessions, yoga (including an outdoor yoga deck overlooking the grounds), meditation and Pilates are available throughout the week. The combination of a physiotherapist in the spa and a fully equipped gym makes SO/ Sotogrande unusually well set up for sports-focused guests who need both performance training and recovery support.
| Thalassotherapy at SO/ Sotogrande
The resort’s new thalassotherapy-inspired treatment programme draws on the proximity of the Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines to incorporate sea minerals, marine algae and thermal sea water therapies. Treatments include a signature olive-based hammam ritual, marine body wraps, and hydrotherapy circuits that are particularly effective for sports recovery after intensive golf or racquet sport sessions. The programme is available as standalone spa breaks or as an add-on to golf and activity packages. |
6. Water sports, polo, cycling and other activities
Beyond golf, padel, tennis and spa, Sotogrande’s activity portfolio extends across water, land and air — making it genuinely suitable for mixed groups where not every member is a golfer.
Water sports
- Kayaking and SUP: available through the hotel and La Reserva Beach Club
- Sailing: the Sotogrande marina is one of the finest on the southern Spanish coast; sailing tours available
- eFoiling: available on inland lakes — one of the more unusual and exhilarating options on offer
- Dolphin watching: sailing tour through the Strait of Gibraltar; dolphin sightings are common; views of both continents simultaneously
Polo
The Santa Maria Polo Club in Sotogrande is the most important polo venue in southern Europe and one of the top clubs in the world. The international high-goal polo season runs from June to September, with matches open to the public and a social scene that draws the European equestrian world. Polo lessons and introductory sessions are bookable through the hotel concierge.

Cycling and e-biking
The SO/ Sotogrande hotel offers bicycle and e-bike rental, and the terrain surrounding the resort — rolling Andalusian countryside, riverside tracks and coastal paths — is ideal for both gentle rides and more demanding mountain biking tours. Guided tours are available for groups.
Family activities
The SO/ Kids Club programme caters for children aged 4 to 13 with supervised activities, games and seasonal events. The family pool features a kids’ zone with inflatables and activities. Family excursions including dolphin watching and a visit to Gibraltar’s Barbary macaques are consistently highlighted by guests with children as highlights of a stay.
7. The surrounding region: Gibraltar, Marbella, Jerez and Morocco
Sotogrande’s geographical position — at the meeting point of the Atlantic and Mediterranean, between Andalusia and the African continent — gives it an extraordinary range of day-trip options within a 90-minute radius.
| Destination | Distance | What to see or do |
| Gibraltar | 20 minutes | The Rock, Barbary macaques, St Michael’s Cave, Duty-free shopping, views of two continents |
| Marbella / Puerto Banus | 30 minutes | Old Town, restaurant strip, Puerto Banus marina, beaches, shopping |
| Tarifa | 30 minutes | Europe’s windsurf capital; kitesurfing; ferry to Morocco (35 min crossing) |
| Tangier, Morocco | Ferry from Tarifa | A different continent, culture and cuisine — 35 minutes by fast ferry |
| Ronda | 60 minutes | One of Spain’s most dramatic hilltop towns; Puente Nuevo bridge; bullfighting heritage |
| Jerez de la Frontera | 75 minutes | Sherry bodegas, Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, flamenco |
| Cadiz | 90 minutes | One of Europe’s oldest cities; cathedral, seafood, carnival tradition |
| Seville | 2 hours | UNESCO World Heritage cathedral, Alcazar palace, flamenco, tapas culture |
The option of spending one afternoon in Morocco is one that many Sotogrande guests cite as a highlight of their stay — and it is available to almost no other European resort. The fast ferry from Tarifa to Tangier takes 35 minutes, and a guided day trip combining the medina, souks and a traditional Moroccan lunch is bookable through the hotel concierge.
8. Getting to Sotogrande: airports and transfer times
| Airport | Code | Distance | Transfer time | Notes |
| Gibraltar International | GIB | 20 km | 20 minutes | Closest airport; limited European routes but growing |
| Malaga International | AGP | 100 km | 60–70 minutes | Main international hub; most European capitals served direct |
| Jerez de la Frontera | XRY | 75 km | 1 hour 15 minutes | Good for UK and seasonal European routes |
| Seville | SVQ | 145 km | 2 hours | Useful for long-haul connections via Madrid |
For most European visitors, Malaga is the most practical entry point: it offers the broadest range of direct connections from across the continent, and the 60–70 minute transfer to Sotogrande is straightforward via the AP-7 motorway. Gibraltar is the closest airport and growing in route network, particularly for UK visitors. The SO/ Sotogrande hotel can arrange private transfers from any of the above airports; the hotel also operates a limo fleet for guests requiring a higher level of transfer service.
| Travel tip
The AP-7 motorway between Malaga and Sotogrande is toll-free as of 2020, making the drive significantly more convenient. Car hire at Malaga Airport is well-priced and highly recommended for guests planning excursions to Ronda, Jerez or Tarifa during their stay. |
9. Best time to visit and practical planning tips
| Season | Weather | Golf & Sport | Atmosphere |
| March – May (Spring) | 18–24°C; some rain; lush green | Ideal: cool mornings, perfect afternoon temperatures | Quiet to moderately busy; great value |
| June – early July | 24–30°C; dry and sunny | Excellent: long days, warm but not extreme | Pre-peak; good availability |
| July – August | 30–35°C; very hot midday | Golf and tennis best early morning or evening | Peak season; polo season; busiest and most expensive |
| September – October | 22–28°C; warm and stable | Best golf and padel conditions of the year | Post-peak; excellent value; still warm |
| November – February | 14–20°C; mild; occasional rain | Year-round golf; cooler but very playable | Very quiet; lowest prices; peaceful |
September and October are arguably the finest months to visit Sotogrande for a sports-focused stay. The summer heat has softened, the courses and courts are in perfect condition after the season, the resort is quieter than the peak months and accommodation rates are meaningfully lower. Spring (March to May) is a close second — the landscape is at its greenest, the light is extraordinary and the weather is ideal for full days on the course without the temperature extremes of summer.
- Golf reservations: Valderrama tee times require booking well in advance; The Alto Club and La Reserva are more accessible but should still be pre-booked, especially for groups
- Padel and tennis: book courts at least 24–48 hours ahead in peak season; the hotel concierge can arrange this
- Polo: the high-goal season runs June to September at Santa Maria Polo Club; public viewing is free and the atmosphere is unlike any other sport in Europe
- Family visits: the SO/ Kids Club and family pool are seasonal (Easter to September); outside this period the indoor pool and adult facilities remain fully available
- Currency: Euro; all major cards accepted throughout the resort and surrounding area
- Dress code: Valderrama and Real Club de Golf Sotogrande have strict dress codes; collared shirts and tailored trousers or shorts mandatory on the course and in the clubhouse
Sotogrande does not need to market itself aggressively. The guests who discover it tend to return, and the facilities speak for themselves: a Ryder Cup golf course ten minutes from the hotel, glass-walled padel courts in a pine forest, a thalassotherapy spa with views of the Mediterranean, and the option — unique in European resort travel — of spending tomorrow afternoon in Morocco. It is a destination that rewards the traveller who arrives without rushing and leaves with a long list of reasons to come back. info@vacationize.com
