Europe’s finest wellbeing and medical resort

Grand Resort Bad Ragaz – a world apart in the Swiss Alps

There are places that simply defy comparison. The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is one of them. Nestled in the foothills of the Swiss Alps in Eastern Switzerland, just one hour from Zurich, this five-star resort has spent over 180 years perfecting the art of wellbeing. It began in 1240 when Benedictine monks discovered the warm thermal spring deep in the Tamina Gorge. Today, that same spring still feeds every pool, bath and thermal experience at the resort – at precisely 36.5 degrees Celsius, the temperature of the human body.

The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz has been recognised as Europe’s Best Spa Resort at the World Spa Wellness Awards and is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. With 233 rooms and suites across two five-star hotels, 7 restaurants holding a total of 6 Michelin stars, a team of 70 medical professionals, two championship golf courses, Switzerland’s largest sauna village and an outdoor thermal pool that allows guests to swim beneath snow-covered peaks in mid-winter – it is not simply a luxury hotel. It is an entirely self-contained world dedicated to health, pleasure and renewal.

Discovered in 1240 – unchanged ever since

The Tamina Thermal Spring – the source of everything

Everything at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz begins with water. Since 1240, the thermal spring deep within the Tamina Gorge – a dramatic limestone canyon carved by glacial meltwater just behind the resort – has produced water at a constant 36.5 degrees Celsius, the exact temperature of the human body. This is not a coincidence. It is the reason guests step into the thermal pools and feel, almost immediately, that something has shifted.

The water is naturally rich in minerals including magnesium, lithium, copper and zinc. These properties, combined with the body-temperature warmth, give it genuine therapeutic qualities recognised by European medical authorities. It has historically been used in the treatment of circulatory disorders, rheumatism, post-accident rehabilitation and neurological conditions. Today it serves both as a therapeutic instrument and as the most extraordinary bathing experience imaginable.

Tamina Therme: the public thermal spa

The Tamina Therme is the resort’s public thermal bath, open to hotel guests and non-residents alike. Its 6,050 square metres of space encompass the historic Helena Pool (the resort’s original 19th-century pool, now beautifully restored), a sports pool, an outdoor garden pool, a family spa area and an extensive sauna landscape. Hotel guests have complimentary access to the spa and sauna area. The architecture of the Tamina Therme has been described as a masterwork of alpine spa design: stone, glass and water combined in a building that feels both timeless and contemporary.

The Sauna Village

In 2021 the resort completed its new sauna village – one of the most ambitious spa infrastructure projects in Switzerland in years. The village features three distinctive saunas, including Switzerland’s largest infusion sauna, built from Scandinavian Kelo wood that fills the air with a resinous warmth unlike any other. A natural outdoor pond, a sun terrace and a series of cooling experiences complete one of the most immersive sauna environments in Europe.

The NEWYOU Method – evidence-based wellbeing

36.5 Wellbeing Spa and the NEWYOU Method – your healthiest self

For hotel guests, the 36.5 Wellbeing Spa operates as an exclusive sanctuary alongside the public Tamina Therme. Named after the 36.5-degree thermal water and the human body’s own core temperature, the spa philosophy rests on the principle of alignment: helping the body and mind return to a natural state of balance.

The resort has developed its own proprietary health methodology, the NEWYOU Method – an evidence-based, experience-driven programme that combines medical diagnostics, nutritional science, physical training and regenerative treatments into personalised multi-day retreats. Guests begin with a comprehensive health assessment; the resort’s team of 70 doctors and therapists then tailors a programme specific to each individual’s goals. Switzerland’s only two-course resort

Golf at Grand Resort Bad Ragaz – two courses, one unforgettable setting

The Grand Resort Bad Ragaz is the only hotel resort in Switzerland with two golf courses on its own grounds. Both are consistently ranked among Switzerland’s finest courses and offer a golfing experience that combines technical challenge with some of the most spectacular Alpine scenery in Europe.

The 18-Hole Championship Course

The championship course is laid out across the broad Rhine Valley floor with the Swiss and Liechtenstein Alps as a permanent backdrop. At par 72, it demands precision and patience from players of all handicap levels. The course has been described by Swiss Golf Magazine as one of the best-kept courses in the country: fairways that reward thoughtful shot selection, subtly complex greens and a layout that uses the natural topography of the valley to create genuine variety across all 18 holes. A full-service golf academy provides individual and group instruction, with PGA-qualified professionals available for lesson bookings.

The 9-Hole Executive Course

The executive course is the ideal choice for guests who wish to play a shorter round, for beginners, or for those who want to warm up ahead of a championship game. It is also popular for MICE groups seeking a golf activity that does not require a full day on the course. Both courses share a well-stocked Pro Shop and a dedicated golf restaurant, the Gladys, which holds 13 GaultMillau points and serves regional cuisine with terrace views across the fairways.
